Press Release - June 16, 2002

INDIA TX - The India Child Labor Coalition today organized a demonstration at the South India Coal Mines to protest the use of child labor in the extraction and processing of the mineral.

Hollis McCanty, 61, Founder and Executive Director, joined the marchers, holding a sign that read "No More Abuse!"

Police reported about 500 demonstrators picketed the mine's main gate. There were no arrests.

Children as young as 13 were seen cheering the demonstrators, however they were gathered up, given shovels and disappeared into a mine shaft.

"It is time this abuse comes to an end," McCanty said.
